How to Make an Impact in Your Community

Community is everything. I truly believe that giving back to your community can be one of the most rewarding and humbling things you can do. I started volunteering this semester at animal shelters and Salvation Army thrift stores as a requirement for a scholarship; however, I've started to realize that every time I volunteer I am happier and more fulfilled. I've created a list of ways you can help your community and give back!

1. Donate old clothes to a thrift store or donation box.
Dig through your closet to find any clothes that no longer fit or that you don't wear. Low-income families can't afford new clothes and often go to thrift stores to find good deals. If you donate clothes you can help families have coats for the winter, tennis shoes for playing, and jeans for the fall!

2. Donate canned foods to a local food pantry.
Many families rely on canned food since it lasts long. Dig through your pantry and see if there are any canned foods that you won't use and take them to a food pantry.

3. Recycle paper and plastics.
Many communities have a recycling center. Collect plastic water bottles, laundry detergent bottles, printer paper, etc and drop them off so they can be recycled.

4. Volunteer!
I personally love to volunteer at animal shelters because they are so happy when new people are at the shelter and they are in constant need of attention and their cages are often filthy. There is a website called GivePulse where you can find opportunities to volunteer in your area! Plus, employers can look at how many hours you've done on there and see what you have contributed!

5. Pick up trash when you see it.
There's an organization called Take 3 for the Sea where their mission is to have people pick up 3+ pieces of trash to save the ocean and environment. Even if you don't live near an ocean, eventually trash will end up there. So join the effort and pick up trash whenever you see it! Click here to learn facts about plastic, you will be shocked!

6. Donate toys to thrift stores.
Just like your clothes, donate any toys that your kids no longer use! If you throw them away, they will add on to the massive amount of plastic that's in landfills already. Instead, donate toys to thrift stores so other children can play with them. Also, daycare facilities or churches might accept them too.

How do you contribute to your community?
xoxo
Gabby
